The Functional Inventory of Critical Skills (FICS) is a
teacher-administered inventory that informs how the student
is progressing with regard to the acquisition of
functionally adaptive skills. Though initially designed as
a tool to inform neurodevelopment, this inventory has been
specifically adapted for use in educational settings with
students with moderate-to-severe disabilities. When
administered by a teacher who is familiar with the student,
the resulting profile provides a measure of proficiency,
implication of behavioral interference, and level of
environmental support required to obtain compliance.
Obtaining a FICS Profile can assist the IEP team in
identifying and monitoring IEP goals. In addition to
monitoring specific IEP goals, teachers are also able to
monitor the student’s overall progress through
quarterly, or semi-annual administration of the FICS.
